Anti-LGBTQ Haters Already Making Excuses for the Shooting at Club Q

These haters misuse and overuse inflammatory buzzwords such as "groomers," pedophiles" and so on against LGBTQ people in general, not just certain individuals who harmed children.  Yet, they provide no evidence that LGBTQ people are more commonly pedophiles than heterosexual, cisgender men.  This is the same old, tired, cliche "save the children" rhetoric used historically and presently that has nothing to do with actually saving children, but has everything to do with stoking moral panics and hatred against certain categories of people.  

These haters fail to acknowledge how there's a difference between respecting and affirming a child or teenager's gender identity or sexual orientation and accepting them for who they are vs. imposing this onto them and "grooming" them into being gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, or gender non-conforming.  

The shooting started minutes before Nov. 20.  This date might not be just coincidence considering that it's Transgender Day of Remembrance globally- a day to memorize transgender people killed due to violence and hatred and advocate for the safety and well-being of trans people.

Furthermore, the shooting happened shortly after a drag queen show.  This might not be coincidence either considering the widespread vilification of drag queens on social media, in many cases just for reading books to children.  In some cases, places hosting drag shows or other events featuring drag queens have been vandalized.  To anybody who calls this grooming, I ask grooming how?  Grooming kids to be kind, compassionate, socially conscious, and reject your hatred against gender non-conforming people. 

Amidst the hatred, there was some love when two brave people intervened to stop the shooter.  Tragically, some people were already shot before this happened.

In Loving Memory of the Loving Woman Who Coined the Term Sex Work

 Carol Leigh, the woman who coined the term sex work , recently passed away at 71-years-old.  I'm very grateful for having the opportunity to get to know this amazing woman who devoted decades to advocating for the human rights of sex workers.  I first met Carol in 2004 at a sex workers' rights event in Berkeley, California where she was dressed as her flamboyant persona, Scarlot Harlot and performed.   Later, I met her as Carol when we were in somebody's living room putting together advocacy signs.
